What is a contact sheet?
A contact sheet is one 8” x 10” print made in the darkroom that contains tiny, thumbnail images of a film roll. Each image is about 1.4 inches wide. The purpose of a contact sheet is to help a photographer see the images at a glance and to help them decide which images to enlarge (i.e., to print at a larger size).
Why are your film photography prices higher
than your digital photography prices?
Film, chemistry, darkroom paper, and photographic facilities all cost money! Also, film processing and darkroom printing simply take more time than printing an image digitally.
What is the difference between film photography and digital photography?
In a nutshell, photographers used flexible, translucent film to capture images long before digital photography was invented. One 35mm film segment is approximately the size of a postage stamp. While digital cameras capture visual information digitally through a sensor, film photography images are created by a reaction between a light-sensitive emulsion and light. This film, coated with the emulsion, must go through a set of chemistry for the images to appear. Then, to create darkroom prints, an enlarger (which could be simply described as a downward-facing projector) projects the image onto a sheet of light-sensitive paper. This paper then goes through a similar set of chemistry to produce your beloved darkroom print.
Why did you decide to specialize in this specific
style of black and white photography?
While I was in undergrad studying photography, I experimented with different techniques of taking film photographs. While experimenting with black and white 35mm film, I fell in love with what an overexposed 35mm black and white photograph would produce; a grain so intense that it obscures detail to the point of creating a nostalgic, dreamlike quality. While many photographers are passionate about capturing detailed scenes that closely meet reality, I enjoy the unique abstraction, wonder, and general feeling that this style of photography provides. I emphasize capturing spontaneous, candid portraits using the Dreamscape style because it only adds to the wonder of capturing the honest, unedited joy found in the memories that we share.
Why black and white?
I am a multi-faceted artist. I love pushing the bounds of creating and, to be completely honest, much of my analog photographic artwork is in color. I chose to focus on this style of 35mm portraiture because it felt dreamlike and elicits emotion. It just happens to be in black and white! Plus, working in a black and white darkroom is more accessible where I live, and I wanted my clients to be able to experience the quality of darkroom prints.
