February 5, 2024 News Installation #4: February at Femme Fatale!
Happy February!
I am delighted to share that starting this month I am partnering with Femme Fatale D.C. in Washington, D.C. as a Creative Entrepreneur. What this means is that my photographic art prints are now for sale at Femme Fatale D.C., a grassroots retail space featuring artworks and products from businesses that are 50% or more womxn-owned. These prints range in size from as small as 2" x 2.75" to 11" x 14" and are each accompanied by a printed artist statement (size permitting.)
Femme Fatale is open every day from 11AM until 6PM at 3409 Connecticut Ave. NW Washington, D.C., right by the Cleveland Park Metro stop.
Femme Fatale hosts a myriad of fun events, including (but not limited to) collage nights and clothing swaps. I encourage you to check out their website below to see what events are currently happening!

If you are in the D.C. area, I encourage you to come out to this month's collage night at Femme Fatale on February 14th at 7PM!
Something else that I am excited to share is that I recently completed a few pieces for my ongoing photographic series, entitled "Reading the Back," where I critique food safety standards in the U.S. I do this by dual exposing a painted and stamped negative with a 35mm C-41 negative that I had shot in a grocery store. Throughout my artist statements, I cite journal and news articles. You can read more on my website, linked below:
Thank you for your time and interest–happy spring!
Sincerely,
Megan

November 17, 2023 News Installation #3: November News!
Thank you for your interest in keeping updated with my practice as an artist! I have a few updates to share with you all.
Firstly, starting September 1st this year, I have begun a new role as the Interim Upper School Photography & Imaging Teacher at the Sidwell Friends School in Washington, D.C. At Sidwell, I have had the pleasure of working alongside the longtime high school photography instructor and photographer, Lely Constantinople. Just this past week we had our first field trip for Advanced Students to the National Gallery, where we viewed two exhibitions: "Etched by Light: Photogravures from the Collection, 1840–1940" and "Dorothea Lange: Seeing People." If you remember from history class, Lange photographed the famous "Migrant Mother" image.
We also had the amazing opportunity to see original prints in the print study room; students picked out the images that they wanted to see ahead of time. Notably, we saw Gustave Le Gray's "Brig on the Water" albumen print from 1856–an early example of "photoshop" (layering negatives) before computers existed! We also had the chance to see Hiroshi Sugimoto's "Tri City Drive-In, San Bernardino," a 1993 gelatin silver print from his Drive-In Theaters series.
Here, you can check out the selected works online from both the Dorothea Lange and Photogravure exhibitions:

Another exciting update I have is that I was recently contacted by a magazine for a 10-page spread feature. Since MAPS Magazine is based out of Korea and ordering the magazine online to be shipped internationally can be expensive, I am making the 10-page spread of specifically my work readily available to view on my website. If you want to see the rest of the issue, I encourage you to order a copy of the magazine online from their website!
A special thank-you goes out to my models who signed model releases/consented to being featured in the magazine. I appreciate you!

One last thing that I am pleased to share is that two of my pieces were featured in the Hartford Art School Senior Thesis reception at LiveWell in Plantsville, CT. The reception was on September 6th, 2023. Below you can find an image of a viewer and one of my pieces at the opening, borrowed from their FaceBook Page, which is linked below!
Thank you for your time and interest–I wish you a happy holiday season!
Sincerely,
Megan

My classmates are displaying some amazing work, such as 4x5 photography, tintypes, and found image photography. My work will feature images from my family photo archive.
If you cannot make it, the show will be on display during gallery hours, which you can find on the Joseloff Gallery's website:

Didn't make it to the "Touring Tourism" exhibition opening? There's still time to see the work! The exhibition will be on display in the Mortensen Library at the University of Hartford through Sunday, May 14th 2023 (more information on the flier below):
If you need assistance with obtaining a visitor parking pass, please do not hesitate to reach out via email. The work is available to view whenever the Harrison Libraries are open; when you walk into the main entrance, walk up the stairway directly in front of you and the work will be on display along the columns directly ahead of you. You can view the library hours here:
Finally, I am happy to announce that after graduating this May, I will be working as the Head of Photography at an arts center in New Jersey. I am elated to have the opportunity to continue to work and and teach photography in a darkroom environment.
Until next time,
Megan

January 1st, 2023 News Installation #1: New Year, Newsletter!
Thank you for your interest in keeping updated with my practice as an artist, and Happy New Year! First and foremost, thank you so much to everyone who attended the "Touring Tourism" artist reception and opening. There was an excellent turnout and it was wonderful connecting with everyone who attended. In order to keep with the theme of the exhibition, there was an imported and cultural treats table with non-alcoholic wine from Spain, Poppy Seed and Chocolate Rolls from a New York Czech-Slovak bakery, and Panettone from Italy. I gave a brief artist's talk. If you missed it, don't worry! The artist statements are detailed and self explanatory.
If you won't be able to make it to the University of Hartford to see the exhibition in person, you are in luck! I am happy to announce that the "Touring Tourism" exhibition is now available to view virtually on my website. I made a point to make this available because I received feedback from friends in other U.S. states and in other countries that they would be interested in seeing the exhibition virtually.
So, if you yourself are one of those people (or would like to share the exhibition content with a friend outside of the Hartford, Connecticut area) it is now possible! You can access the virtual exhibition using the link below:

If you would like to view the exhibition in-person (which is my personal preference when viewing work) the plan is for the exhibition to remain on display in the Mortensen Library at the University of Hartford until I graduate in May 2023. If you need assistance with obtaining a visitor parking pass, please do not hesitate to reach out via email. The work is available to view whenever the Harrison Libraries are open; when you walk into the main entrance, walk up the stairway directly in front of you and the work will be on display along the columns directly ahead of you. A limited amount of postcard art prints featuring works from the exhibition (adhering to U.S. mail standards) are available for purchase.
Price is $5.00 per card, plus shipping ($0.60 minimum.)
Email megarteninfo@gmail.com or DM megarten@instagram to purchase. See images available below:

Since I am a Senior graduating in 2023, during the Spring 2023 semester the Photography Senior Class will be hosting an exhibition (and art opening) to serve as a visual conclusion to our time studying as undergrads at the Hartford Art School. While we are still working out the exact art opening date, I do know that our exhibition will be open for display in late April in the Joseloff Gallery on campus. Below is a link to the Hartford Art School Class of 2023 Photography Student Instagram, where we will be posting the latest updates on our Spring 2023 exhibition:
Analogue Photography Exhibition Recommendations
Let's discuss a couple of photography exhibitions other than my own!
(Note: both exhibitions below are in Maine, so these recommendations are
geared toward my friends in the Northeast, unless you want to take a trip.)
I recently had the opportunity over my Winter Break to explore two darkroom
photography exhibitions. I wanted to share and encourage others to check them out as well!
#1: "Presence" at the Portland Museum of Art // Portland, Maine
I loved this exhibition and was impressed by the sheer number of photographs, significant photographers, and familiar faces. You can find photographs of British Actress Audrey Hepburn and Photographer Robert Mapplethorpe. In addition, I was introduced to some interesting photographers that I had never heard of before.
You can learn more on the PMA's website.
#2: "Women Behind the Lens" at the Maine Maritime Museum // Bath, Maine
Although a much smaller exhibition, it is worth the trip if you are interested in early female photographers like I am. I will say that I found the use of the term "amateur photographers" controversial, especially since one of the artists referred to herself as a photographer for her occupation and utilized advanced printing techniques. This being said, I am happy that they chose to feature three female photographers. Overall I felt that the exhibition was interesting and worth the visit. You can learn more on the Maine Maritime Museum's Website.
